The company hospital at Balikpapan was founded in 1906 by the Nederlandsch-Indische Industrie en Handel Maatschappij (Source: Koloniaal Verslag 1907). The hospital was managed by a European doctor. It was a general hospital.
Balikpapan was the main town of the department Samarinda, situated in the Residency of South East Borneo. The town prospered after the establishment of the Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij. (Gonggryp 1934, 72).
