Lebong was a subdepartment of the department of the same name in the Residency of Benkoelen under a Controleur as administrative head. The main town was Moearaaman. The subdepartment has 23,000 inhabitants of whom 200 Europeans and 1,000 Chinese. The government owned gold mining company Tambang Sawah was closed at the beginning of the 1930s. (Gonggryp 1934, 727).
