Welcome

Welcome to all who are interested in medical history.
Nowadays (2015) apart from about 10,000 community health centres (Puskesmas) some 2,400 hospitals function all over the Indonesian archipelago.
About 900 of the hospitals are government owned and some 1,500 are private.
The origin of quite a few of the hospitals (Rumah sakit) dates from 1890 to 1940.
During that period private charity and business organisations joined the national, regional and local authorities in founding these hospitals.
This website tells the story of most of these hospitals.
The rise of a modern hospital system in Indonesia is situated in the first half of the 20th century.
Different types of hospitals such as general and specialized hospitals are distinguished.
The initiators vary from government, mission organizations, private foundations to commercial or agrarian companies.
Just at the start of the Republic Indonesia (1945) some 700 hospitals were counted.
Most of these hospitals will be found in the accompanying database.
