In former times company initiatives of oil companies, plantations, mines and industrial factories saw to it that their employees and their families could be cared for in company hospitals.
After independence some of these business hospitals were continued, often under a different name.
The letters BUMN (Badan Usaha Milik Nasional) mean Holding of National Companies. The BUMN agency has the task of administering government affairs in the SOE sector, to assist the President in administering state government. The development of these state-owned enterprises includes the development of entities controlled by SOEs either directly or indirectly in accordance with the provisions. The following functions are carried out: formulation and determination of policies in the field of formulating strategic business initiatives, strengthening competitiveness and synergy, strengthening performance, creating sustainable growth, restructuring, business development, and increasing the capacity of BUMN business infrastructure;
Among others we may distinguish various plantation organizations: Sugar cane (tebu), tobacco (tembakau), oil palm (kelapa sawit), thee (teh), rubber (perkebunan karet) were dominant in the past and are still encountered in the names of the business organizations. Pertamina is the State Oil company, Pelabahan is encountered in the name when firms manage port facilities.
PTPN stands for Perseroan Terbatas Perkebunan Nusantara : Limited Liability Company of Indonesian Plantations.
