This psychiatric hospitals is one of the health establishments of the province of Maluku. The Ambon Psychiatric Hospital was built in the years 1980 and started its activities on 14 september 1985. It was inaugurated on 12 Oktober 1990 by the Minister of Health Dr. Adhyatma. It started as a category B hospital with 54 beds. Its building surface was 442 square meters.

The most important obstacle in this province are the enormous distances. Maluku is known as the province of “Thousand islands” with a surface of 851,000 square kilometers and a population of 1,852,723 people. Since 2002 a local trauma center was opened. The Ambon Central Mental Hospital started as a so-called Kemkes hospitaal, but functions nowadays as a Regional Special Hospital (RSKD) of Maluku Provinvce.
