Goenoeng Melajoe was situated in the department Asahan of the Government eastcoast of Sumatra.The main town of the department was Tandjoeng Balai.The selfgoverning Landschap Asahan that coincides with the subdepartment Asahan had 135,000 inhabitants, of whom 700 Europeans and 9,500 Chinese. The tobacco culture from earlier days was changed into rubber culture, because climate and soil were less adapted to tobacco cultures. (Gonggryp 1934, 34).
