

The company hospital Tandjong Slamat was an initiative of the Deli tobacco company. The hospital was established about 1905.
In the hospital ressort Tandjong Poera the company Tandjong Slamat employed in 1929 a number of 9,813 employees of whom in that year 6.32 % died in the central hospital of the company (B.M van Driel, Mededeelingen Pathologisch Laboratorium at Medan, nr. 9).
The main picture was published by the KITLV in 1905 (Imagebank no. 88344). It shows the hospital and the house of the pharmacist. The original album nrs 2/61 and K 28 were made by J.B. Obernetter at Munchen.
IISG: from ‘Gedenkschrift 60-jarig bestaan Deli Maatschappij’ (1869-1929) pag. 35:Because of the growth of the number of rubber companies it was decided to found a new hospital at Tandjong Slamat. This hospital was opened on the 1st of November 1922 and was completed by a mother and child clinic for Javanese women. Initially the population was not enthousiast about this way of care, but eventually people got used to it. In 1929 already 250-300 children were annually delivered in this clinic. The investment in the new hospital amounted to fl 532,000. The number of workers in the Tandjong Slamat company was 9,463.
