The health resort Gadok was established by a private doctor about 1853 near Buitenzorg.
It was a specialized institution that received subsidy from the government on condition that civil servants and military officers should be treated a ta reduced rate or for free. (See Koloniaal Verslag 1866). The KV 1872 mentions a monthly contribution by the government of ƒ 600.
