In the Residency Tapanoeli a leprosy asylum was founded in 1922 in the main town of the sub department Groot en Klein-Mandailing, Hoeloe and Pakistan, department of Padangsidempoean, Residency Tapanoeli. This main town was known as Kotanopa.
