Leprosy hospital Bindjei

As far as the institutions for leprosy concerns, the reports indicate that in the hospital of Pelantoengan (Semarang) a total of 83 patients had been nursed in 1897, of wom 22 of European background. Two of them deceased and 37 had been discharged on demand. At Wangkoeng (Soerakarta) a number of 103 patients had been nursed in 1897. By the end of that year 108 were still present, as 29 died, 9 had been evacuated and 17 had been discharged. The institute for leprosy patients at Loano (Djogjakarta) had 293 patients during the year of 1897. Of them 200 had been discharged and 42 had died.

Near to the capital city of Pontianak (Western Borneo) a leprosy asylum had been established by the local government in accordance with the population that agreed to finance the institution. In this institution 7 persons were nursed by the end of the year 1897 and the local population took care of their costs of living.

In the Residency of Eastern Sumatra where a concentration of leprosy cases may be found among the immigrated Chinese population, the leprosy asylum of Medan in the Residency Eastcoast of Sumatra , where leprosy is to be found among the immigrated Chinese population, the leprosy asylum at Medan (making part of the earlier mentioned immigration asylum) housed 84 patients by the end of 1897, that is 15 patients more than at the end of 1896. During the year of 1896 41 new patients were accepted and 12 were discharged as healthy persons and 14 deceased. Furthermore, at Medan and at Tandjong-Poera (Beneden Langkat) a leprosy asylum is present, financed by well-to-do Chinese.
