In the Koloniaal Verslag for the year 1878 mention was made of a Leprosy hospital at Wangkung in the so-called Principalities.
The hospital was maintained by the Javanese nobility and had at some time considerable numbers of patients. From 1878 the numbers decreased (47 patients by the end of the year), but from 1890 the numbers increased again until 108 (1898). From then on they dropped sharply and after 1900 no mention is made any more.
