This hospital was initiated in 1910, when a number of Catholic lay figures from Batavia under the leadership of Mgr. Edmundus Sybrandus Luypens SJ (Vicar Apostolic Batavia), Pastor Sondaal SJ, Pastor van Swieten SJ, Bp. Karthaus, took the initiative to establish a Catholic hospital in Batavia.
Early 1915, Mdr. Lucia Nolet, (General Superior of the Sisters of Charity of St. Carolus Borromeus 1914-1926) accepted Mgr. Luypens, SJ to open a mission in the Dutch East Indies – Batavia.
Due to the situation of the first world war at that time, it was not until June 22, 1918, that the ten CB Sisters from Holland left for Batavia by ship, and arrived at Tanjung Priok on October 7, 1918.
On January 21, 1919 St. Health Service Carolus was started and blessed by Mgr. E.S Luypen, SJ with a capacity of 40 beds.
