The mission hospital at Nainggolan, situated in the utmost southwest corner of the Samosir island in the Toba Lake in the country of the Batak people was officially an auxiliary hospital, as there was no medical doctor or dokter djawa permanently assigned to the hospital.  Its date of establishment is not exactly known, but from 1914 the hospital received a government subsidy and this subsidy was continued to 1942. The hospital was founded by the Rheinische Mission, a German missionary association at Barmen that initiated a number of hospitals in Sumatra, in the Residency of Tapanuli and in Batak country.

Repertorium van Nederlandse  zendings- en missie-archieven 1800-1960 : From 1926 to 1980 the so-called Samosir Zending took care of the missionary establishments on Samosir. In 1929 and 1930 the deaconesses J.  Rijkhoek and S. Siderius were sent and in 1936 the nurses H. Fokkema and T. Jenken. The nurses Rijkhoek and Fokkema worked together with the new missionary deaconess H.Polstra and the missionary doctor A. Scheurkogel after 1945 on Sumatra in hospitals at Pematangsiantar, Tarutung and Kabanjahe. Later on they were stationed on Samosir. In 1930, the Huria Kristen Batak Protestan emanated from  the Rheinische Missionsgesellschaft. This HKBP is at the moment the largest Protestant Church Association in Indonesia. The hospital at Nainggolan nowadays is called Rumah Sakit HKBP  Nainggolan.

The Governor-General Tjarda van Starkenborgh Stachouwer visited in March 1940 various places in North, East and West Sumatra, a.o. also the missionary hospital at Nainggolan. He was welcomed by the missionary Rijkhoek (See Reisverslag Monday 4 March to Wednesday 27 March 1940 (KITLV 27256).
