The small mission hospital at Gamsoengi was founded in 1906 by the Utrechtse Zendingsvereeniging that had her mission fields in Ternate in the Northern Moluccas.
Ternate was a Department and autonomous ruling Landscape with a capital by the same name of the Residency of the Moluccas that before had been a Government. The main food is sago that is present abundantly. An important means of subsistence are products from the woods, such as timer, rotan, damar and gomcopal (Gonggryp 1934, 1401).
The hospital is mentioned in the subsidy list of 1911 for the first time and is classified as a class I hospital (10 – 25 beds). See Koloniaal Verslag 1930, annex O that mentions a subsidy of f 3,220 for personnel and of f 2,573 for other expenditure.
Nowadays there is a hospital called Rumah Sakit Betesda at Gamsungi and a regional hospital at Tobelo (North Moluccas, North Halmahera).
