Ziekenhuis Geestelijk Gehandicapten

The Institution for mentally handicapped patients was founded in 1920 at Temanggoeng in the Residency Kedoe. The initiator was the Association “Zendingsonderneming”. The initiative was subsidized and proved viable. In the years 1929 and 1930 its capacity was 90 beds. On average 51 patients were admitted and the number of nursing days was in 1930 18,887. The subsidy for that year amounted to ƒ 8,535 (Source: Verslag van bestuur en staat van NI over het jaar 1930, 382-387). In the Indisch Verslag 1938 the capacity was increased to 120 and on average 141 beds were occupied (51,343 nursing days). The subsidy had also been increased to ƒ 15,000.

Temanggoeng was in the 1930s a regency, district and subdistrict of the Residency Kedoe in the province of Central Java. The regency had at that time 279,000 inhabitants, of whom 340 Europeans and 4,350 Chinese. The vulcanoes Soembing, Sindoro and Prahoe are situated in this regency (Gonggryp 1934, 1397).
