Nowadays (2018) there are 42 psychiatric hospitals. Some of them are mental hospitals and addiction clinics in one organization. Some date from long ago, such as the Rumah Sakit Jiwa Dr. H. Marzoeki Mahdi at Bogor, which is the successor of the so-called Krankzinnigengesticht Buitenzorg, dating from 1882.

In the following survey some characteristics of the hospitals of today have been recorded. In some cases the website of the hospital has been indicated, which may serve for additional details of the hospital in question.
