Leprosy hospital Malalajang

On Celebes, in the northern part near Menado, a leprosy facility was founded in 1846 on the nearly inaccessible island of Bangka.*  This Leproserie Malalajang was removed to the mainland, at Tumumpah, in 1855 and on the same island Celebes in the region Gorontalo a home was founded at Modelemo in 1856.

Budddingh affirms this in his ” Neerlands Oost-Indie reizen, 1852-1857, page 359″ : Most probably this occurrence, connected with the circumstance that the institution was remote situated and thus without protection against pirates, contributed to the removal of the Lazaretto in 1855 from the island of Bangka to the river Toemoempa, north of the Bay of Menado and therefeore in the immediate neighbourhood of the Residency.”

This hospital was refounded in 1935 after a lot of discussions by the Protestant community. The publication of Steenbrink does not mention the hospital, whereas the Indische Verslagen of 1935 to 1938 mention a used capacity of resp. 96, 118, 120 and 119 beds. See also the Mededeelingen DVG XXVIII (1939) 2-3: 57-136 a subsidy of f 14,400 was granted for the year 1937 ( 43,969 nursing days at  f 0,32)

From : ” PDF ziekenhuizen Minahasa ca. 1940, pag. 122″ : In 1925 a private association at Menado contributed in the foundation of a primitive leprosy asylum at Toemoempa near Menado (capacity of 40 beds) and asked the Gewestelijk Gouvernements Arts to advise positively about the granting of a subsidy  in the running expenses, because the Minhasa Municipality subsidy and voluntarily private donations did not cover the exploitation coasts any more.

* Next to the island of Bangka in the east of Sumatra, there is a small island Bangka, belonging to the Sangihe-islands north of Celebes.
