Koloniaal Verslag 1879-1880:
The department did not receive statistical information about the patients of hospitals for nursing of syphilitic women. In the years 1876 and 1877 authorization had been obtained to found this type of hospitals in 4 places, where they had not been known before: Wonosobo and Gombomg at Bagelen and Blitar and Toeloeng-Agoeng at Kediri. The two first mentioned have been opened in 1878.
In 1898 the capacity of the Toeloeng-Agoeng institution was enlarged.
Twelve hospitals for syphilitic women were counted in 1877 and by the end of the 19th century the number had increased to 24. The size of the problem was far bigger than the capacity of these institutions was able to provide. Moreover, much discussion took place about a more effective way of dealing with the consequences of prostitution.
The NI Government allowed the following numbers of personnel: for every 30 prostitutes one female servant. In addition, one mandoer, when there were more than 10 prostitutes.
On 1 March 1911 this establishment together with other institutions of the same category was closed in accordance with the newly formulated policy that there was no positive result to be expected of this kind of care.
