The Inlands hospitaal (indigenous hospital) of Madioen was situated in the main town of the Residency of the same name in the province of East Java.
The earliest mention of a hospital at Madioen is with Schoute GTNI 75 (1935) 830, when he described the hospital situation in the period 1850 to 1880: In the principal town was a rather primitive building that served as Stadsverband. The annual report of the Civil Medical Service of 1909 mentions that the hospital at Madioen continued to attract a large number of patients. The maximum number of hospitalized patients was 332, the minimum 156. This means that it was a large hospital as for its capacity of beds. The hospital was mentioned also in the Bijblad van het Staatsblad van Nederlandsch-Indie (Supplement to the NI Statutebook) no. 11446 of 30 August 1927: “Vaststelling van de Regelen betreffende de bestemming van Gouvernements burgerlijke ziekeninrichtingen, de formatie van het personeel, zoomede de kosten van verpleging in die inrichtingen.”( Regulation of target groups, personnel and tariffs of GBZs). The GBZ at Madioen could admit patients in the nursing classes 2, 3 and 4 (nursing fees ƒ 6, ƒ 3 and ƒ 1,50).
In December 1936 there existed still 55 GBZs . In 1938 there were only two remaining. All GBZs (including the one at Madioen) were transferred to local or regional communities. In the case of Madioen most probable to the Municipality of Madioen.
In the 1930s, the Residency of Madioen in the province of East Java had about 1.9 million inhabitants of whom nearly 3,300 Europeans and 9,000 Chinese. The main town Madioen had more than 42,000 inhabitants, of whom 1,700 Europeans and 3,800 Chinese. Madioen is a municipality with municipal council and a mayor. At the border with the Government Surakarta, the vulcano Lawoe (3265m) is situated. At the border with the Residency Kediri, the vulcano Wilis (2563 m) towers with four summits. The water of the vulcanoes is taken away by the river Madioen, which joins the Solorover near Ngawi. This river is suitable for largescale transport. The ResidencyMadioen, together with the neighbouring Residency of Kediri was part of the Realm Mataram till the end of the Java war (1830), when these reguions became part of the NI Government. The town of Madioen is situated on the railway Soerakarta- Soerabaja. The Residency of Madioen comprises the Regencies of Madioen, Magetan, Ngawi, Ponorogo and Patjitan (Gonggryp 1934, 787).
