In the 1930s, Garoet was a regency, district and subdistrict of the Residency Priangan, province of West Java. The principal town Garoet was situated 700 m above sea level and had an agreeable climate. It was well visited because of the natural beauty (Gonggryp 1934, 320).The Indisch Verslag 1930 mentions some statistics of municipal hospitals. The hospital at Garut had in 1929 a capacity of 188 beds. On average 177 were occupied with a total of nursing days of 64,468. Subsidy amounted to f 49,113.
